Shark! 📢 Shark! 📢 Shark! 📢 Get out of the water! 🦈
Fifty years ago JAWS opened in theatres across America. During the production of JAWS, the mechanical shark—nicknamed Bruce (named after Steven Spielberg’s lawyer)—constantly malfunctioned. It was unreliable, often breaking down, contributing to going over budget and delays.
Director Steven Spielberg faced a tough challenge: how to build suspense and fear without the star shark actually working and being in the shot.
In collaboration with the composer John Williams, they created the now-iconic two-note 🎼 E & F theme—simple, ominous, and relentless. That pounding dehn dehn 🎵 …dehn dehn 🎵 …dehn dehn dehn 🎶 ….became the true source of fear, manifesting the shark’s presence even when it wasn’t visible or even there at all. The fear came from inside of us not from the appearance of the shark.
The unseen threat, the imagination of our minds, announced by Williams’ haunting simple music, created tension far more powerful and unique to each person than any mechanical shark would have.
The lesson? The music within us is far more powerful than anything out there. Choose your theme music wisely. You are the way.
Become. 👊
